PUERTO DEL ROSARIO
The town of Puerto Del Rosario is located in the northern part of the Fuerteventura island, in the province of Las Palmas, and as of the year 1835, Puerto Del Rosario has been known as the capital of the island of Fuerteventura. Puerto Del Rosario is also the home of nearly half of the island’s population and as of the year 2009, the town’s documented population reached up to nearly 35,667 with a population density of 123.01 inhabitants per Km2. Puerto Del Rosario extends up to 289.95 Km2, and it is situated at the main highway linking north to Puerto Del Rosario and southwest towards Tuineje and Betancuria.
The town of Puerto Del Rosario came into existence just merely 200 years ago, back when the livestock traders as well as the salt meat traders decided that the town of Puerto Del Rosario can be developed into a port of transit, storage and loading. Then the arrival of commercial shipping towards the island indicated that a coastal location for the island’s capital made a lot more sense than the location of its original capital of Betancuria in the center of the island.
The town was once called as “Puerto De Cabras” (“Goat harbor”), which developed into a significant port throughout the course of the 19th century subsequent to taking the the island’s capital from La Oliva.
The church located in the heart of the town is dedicated to the patron saint ‘Virgin Del Rosario’, however, it was already during the year 1956, when the town was given its current name “Puerto Del Rosario”.
The town of Puerto Del Rosario, is not entirely a touristic destination, since it was more focused on the industrial side of the town. Nevertheless, a lot of people still do visit the town due to the nearby resorts which are located at the Caleta De Fuste in order to do some shopping.
The island has been quite poor when it comes to its cultural side, nonetheless, with the stream of Spanish and other ethnic settlers, along with the better education which is now freely available to all, the town of Puerto Del Rosario is gradually witnessing more and more cultural and modern advances. An ideal example of this is the town’s auditorium that frequently hosts music and theatre evenings, as well as the exhibitions and other matters of popular interest.
The town of Puerto Del Rosario is in fact a clean and tranquil place with wide avenues and streets dotted with white, Africal style establishments which looked a lot like cubes with flat roofs, basically two stories high.
The town may not be entirely focused on tourists alone, however, with comparatively new locations to explore, such as the harbor, which is definitely worth a stroll through, to wander through the fascinating sculptures which are exhibited along the promenade, as well as the pavement cafes which are scattered all over the town.
