SEVILLE

The city of Seville, otherwise known as “Sevilla”, is famed to be the southern part of Spain’s cultural, artistic, and financial capital. Situated at the grassland of the Guadalquivir river, the city of Seville measures up to nearly 14 km2, with an altitude of up to nearly 7 meters or 23 ft above sea level. The city of Seville’s documented population as of the year 2009, was approximately 703,206 (INE), which ranked as the fourth largest city of Spain. The city’s inhabitants are known as “Sevillanos”, which is usually the term to describe the mail inhabitants of Seville, and “Sevillanas” which of course, is the term for the female inhabitants. They are also referred to as the “Hispalenses”.

As specified by some legends, the city of Seville were discovered by Hercules and its origins were associated with the Tartesssian civilization. It was then known as the “Hispalis” when it was under the Roman rule, then was referred to as “Isbilya” during the Moorish rule. Seville’s most historical significance was following the discovery of America.

As previously mentioned, it was the Tartessians who were the original founders of the city of Seville and during the 207 B.C., the Romans built the Itálica. It was the center of their Western Mediterranean supremacy for nearly seven centuries up until the Northern barbarians invaded the Roman empire during the beginning of the 10th century. The Moorish’ long colonization over the Iberian peninsula from 711 A.D. to 1246 A.D. left lasting traces in Seville and all throughout Al Andalus. A tower of an important mosque, popularly known as “La Giralda” is the most well-known remaining Islamic monuments. During the year 1492, the city of Seville played a crucial part towards the discovery and of the conquest of America. It was during the 17th century when Seville reached the peak of its artistic magnificence , wherein well-known painters which includes Velásquez, Murillo as well as Valdéz Leal, and celebrated sculptors like Martinez Montañezz were born and left valuable works of art. The city also assumed a pivotal role in world literature and was the birthplace of the myth of Don Juan. On two occasions, during the 20th century, the city of Seville has been in the spotlight of the world’s attention in world literature and was the origin of the myth of Don Juan. During the year 1929, the city hosted the Latin American Exhibition, which left significant improvements in the city of Seville. A lot more recently, Expo 92 promoted the image of the city of Seville as a modern, bold and powerful city.

The city of Seville is well known due to a number of its landmarks and a few of these are the Cathedral of Seville, which was built from the years 1401-1519 subsequent to the Reconquista on the former site of the city’s mosque. Also known to be the largest of all the medieval and Gothic cathedrals, in terms of both area and volume.

The “Alcázar”, one of the famous landmarks located in the city of Seville, facing towards the cathedral, the landmark’s construction began during the year 1181 and continued throughout the course of nearly 500 years, mostly in Mudéjar style, but also in Renaissance.

Another landmark, known as the “Torre Del Oro” was constructed by the Almohad dynasty to serve as a watchtower and a protective barrier on the river. A chain was strung through the water from the base of the tower in order to stop boats from traveling towards the river port.

The Town Hall, another famed landmark in the city of Seville was constructed during the 16th century in high Plasteresque style by the master architect Diego De Riaño. The Facade to Plaza Nueva was constructed during the 19th century in Neoclassical style.

These are just a few of what lies in the city of Seville, for there are countess landmarks and valuable, historical and magnificent monuments and picturesque views located in Seville. Seville is merely a starting point for the countless cultural routes which the city has to offer, such as the Roman Bética Route or the Washington Irving route, and a lot more.

Seville has also been quite distinguished especially during their celebrations of the Easter Week and “Feria De Abril” or otherwise known as the “April Fair”. These occasions were declared as a National Tourist interest, depicting the Sevillanos/Sevillanas’ devotion and folklore. Further, the people of Seville are exceedingly friendly and open to many tourists/visitors.
