TORROX
The town of Torrox is situated at the Costa Del Sol East, beside the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the mountains of the Sierra De Amijara. The town of Torrox extends up to nearly 51 Km2 which stretches through a valley of the river and has an altitude of 120 m above sea level, with a current population of 16,890 inhabitants (or “Torroxeños”as what they call themselves) as per the year 2009 INE Census.
Torrox is composed of two distinct regions: first is the town itself, situated a couple of kilometers from the coast located in the upper valley of the river of its name which still retains the typical features of the white towns, from the Arab origin, whose primary activity is modern agriculture, greenhouse and subtropical products. Furthermore, their coastline is aimed specially during or for the sun and sand holidays with a wealth of hotels and a clean, well-maintained beaches.
This town is sensational due to its beaches and its historic and artistic heritage. Roman antiquities and the Moorish heritage is located in the Mediterranean coast. Roman archeological remains can be found near the lighthouse along with the 15th century watchtowers. A stroll all over the core of this town is highly recommended, for the town has narrow yet attractive streets, and possess whitewashed houses and balconies, decorated with flowers. This town is also the home of the beautiful Plaza De La Constitución Square as well as the 17th century La Iglesia De Nuestra Señora De La Encarnación.
