MIJAS
Mijas is a town located in the city of Málaga, in Andalusia, southern Spain. It is normally Andalusian white-washed village situated at a mountain side nearly 450 m above sea level, in the center of the Costa Del Sol region. The town’s area extends up to approximately 148 Km2 and their distance from the capital measures nearly 30 km.
According to the year 2008 census, the town of Mijas had approximately 70,473 inhabitants (Mijeños), which in effect made them as the fourth of the most populated towns in the city of Málaga. Mijas concentrates on three major urban regions and these are: Mijas Pueblo, situated on the slopes on the Sierra De Mijas is the historic center of town, Las Lagunas, situated in a region known as “Mijas Costa”, a former part of the urban town “Ciudad De Fuengirola Y La Cala” a coastal town.
The town extends from the Sierra De Mijas to the sea, in a landscape of rolling hills and scattered with houses. The town with an ambiance of a typical Arabic era, continues towards the side of the mountain as if it were a balcony, with its white houses along with the green pine trees providing a high plasticity image and one of the most attractive postcards of the coast.
There are significant places of interest situated in the town of Mijas, including the Sanctuary of the De La Peña, the Bullring, or the complex formed by the Church of the Conception, the Auditorium and the Gardens annexes. On the coast, it highlights the Calaburras beach, and all of the elements that the sun and beach can possibly offer.
The original name for the town of Mijas was known as “Tamisa”, which was later changed to “Mixa” and then finally to “Mijas” as it referred to, today. The history of the name “Tamisa” dates back from the year 600 A.D. when the Tartessians founded the village of Mijas. The Tartessians turned into significant trading partners of the Phoenicians whose presence in Iberia dates from the 8th century B.C.
The gastronomy of Mijas gathers together a wide variety of regional traditions. Nevertheless, the town is famous for its exceptional devotion to first courses, particularly soups: garlic soup “cachorreñas” (with potatoes, cod, and “cachorreña”, orange juice), “maimones” (bread, garlic, and oil) or tomato soup, remembering the well-known “gazpachuelo” (soup of potatoes, bread and mayonnaise). The Designation of Origin Málaga standard, meanwhile, securing outstanding sweet wines.
