MANILVA
The town of Manilva is situated at the most western part of the city of Málaga. Its region stretches from the lower Genal Valley down towards the coast, and composed mostly of gentle hills covered topped with vineyards. The heart of the town is located at nearly two kilometers from the coast, and the town’s main architectural highlight is St. Anne’s Church.
The second adjacent nucleus, located at the coast is known as “Sabinillas”. is also the home of the Sabinillas Castle, dating back towards the reign of Charles III.
Manilva is also referred to as the “Vine Country” and it is also close to the Meditarranean. The entire town of Manilva is surrounded by a sea of vineyards. It is also situated nearly 2 kilometers from the sea. The town’s distance from the city of Málaga, extends up to 95 km, and their entire area measures up to 35 Km2. Manilva is also located at approximately 128 m above square meter.
As documented, during the year 2009 census, the town of Manilva has 13,813 natives. However, the town’s population still vary from time to time due to tourists, and with a floating population of 50,000 people, specially during the months of summer.
The town of Manilva has a very interesting history, dating back towards the Roman times, and still today, there a couple of extraordinarily well-preserved Roman Sulphur baths, and an Aqueduct. The Moors who formerly inhabited the town, left and Manilva eventually faded away, During the 16th century, the towns of Málaga, Marbella and Ronda were concerned were worried that the coastline towards the southern part of Spain was left defenseless and unsecured. Therefore, they iffered free land to those poverty-stricken farmers, in the northern part of Spain. Obviously, considering that the land was given for free, it came with certain disadvantages. The said area were still exposed to raids from the Moorish and Turkish pirates.
The town’s most noticeable feature is the church and its connecting cemetery. Their parish church is old but certainly not ancient, it was built during the 18th century. There is nothing that is of major distinction with regards to the church itself, nor did they focus in its ornaments and decorations. It is basically a good, solid, peaceful place of communal worship, functional with or without being baroque.
