FUENGIROLA

One of the smallest towns in the city of Málaga, covering an extent of 10 Km2, which is almost entirely urbanized, occupies a narrow 8 km coastal strip, with southeast facing beaches. According to the census of year 2009, the town’s current population is approximately 71,482, which makes them the fifth most populated towns in the city of Málaga, and one of the most densely populated, with over 7,100 per Km2. The town of Fuengirola’s natives are called “Fuengiroleños”

Though the town Fuengirola had its Phoenician origin, the town’s history really began during the Arabic times with the construction of Sohall Castle, part of whose walls still remain for guarding purposes. The center of the town still retains a certain traditional ambiance, though it is now obviously distinguished by the hotels, apartments, etc. necessary as their main source of income, which is sun and sand tourism.

Formerly a small fishing town, the town of Fuengirola has turned into a striking metropolis with character. The arrival of numerous up-market tapa bars and good restaurants, intermixed with chic boutiques and further shops of interest, along with remarkable beaches makes it the perfect holiday destination. The main square, “Plaza De Constitución”, has been redesigned but still maintains its unique enchantment. The plaza looks extremely spectacular particularly during Christmas, when its decorated with those extremely captivating lights and enchanting ornaments. It is also captivating during the “Fuengirola Summer Feria”, wherein the whole town of Fuengirola participates in their yearly street celebrations. The narrow pedestrian streets towards the main square is a journey of discovery for a lot of tourists, who come across some of the hidden secrets and pleasant corners of the Andalusian town.

The marvelous seven kilometers (five miles) of sandy beaches, extending from the Sohail Castle towards the west and Torreblanca to the east, is one of the town’s prime tourist destinations.

Nevertheless, the town of Fuengirola continuously offers a lot of leisure possibilities, suited for all ages. Tourists may visit the Zoo, enjoy the water park or tour Sohall Fluvial Park, a large and contemporary recreational area crossed by a passable canal extending 800 meters long. However, tourists may also attend one of the cultural events which are often staged in the Municipal Arts Center or the modern Peace Center.

Considering that the town of Fuengirola is situated near the Costa Del Sol, the town’s gastronomy is distinguished by their primary focus on fish. Either cooked on the grill or salted, remembering the symbolic fried fish and sardines on the split (grilled). Moreover, their traditional delicacies also include “ajoblanco con uvas” (A cold soup with almonds, oil, garlic and grapes) and “gazpacho” (made from tomatoes, pepper, bread, oil and garlic). The entire town of Fuengirola is famous for their outstanding wines labelled under the Designation of Origin Málaga standard, among which the sweet wines are most renowned.
