ESTEPONA
The town of Estepona, is situated at the western part of Costa Del Sol and lies 75 km from the Málaga airport at the foot of Sierra Bermeja mountains. Estepona is one of the well-known resorts and holiday destinations, due to its magnificent beaches that extends up to nearly 23 km of coastline, and area that measures up to approximately 137 Km2. The town is also located approximately 21 m above sea level. Currently, their official documented population reaches up to approximately 39,170. The natives in Estepona are referred to as “Esteponeros”.
Due to the town’s natural environment, being enclosed by the sea and the mountains of Sierra Bermeja, Estepona has a micro climate with more than 325 days of sunshine yearly.
Some antiquities which were discovered at the town of Estepona describes that the town itself was inhabited during the time of the Romans. The name Estepona came from the Moorish Astabbuna. However, Henry IV of Castile, captured the town from the Moors during the year 1467, and a church was constructed on the site of the previous mosque itself. During the year 1729, the town of Estepona was granted its own charter by Philip V of Spain.
Vacations in the town of Estepona offers us with the chance to see a historic region which runs along the beachfront and which has managed to maintain its Andalusian flavor. Whitewashed streets features greatest monuments including the church of Nuestra Señora De Los Remedios, which was constructed back in the 18th century, the tower of the former parish church, as well as the hermitage of the Way Of The Cross, built during the 18th century.
Naval and land battles scenarios that transpired during the Middle Ages, Estepona preserves a fine example of defensive architecture. Along with the castle of San Luis, which was built during the 15th century, dotted along on the coast are the countless watchtowers which were built between the 15th and 16th centuries, which includes the Arroyo Vaquero, Sal Vieja, Padrón, Velerin or Saladillo.
The old Roman baths and other antiquities which were throughout the Tower of The River Guadalmansa, were some of the most remarkable among the profuse remnants of its rich, Roman past.
