BENALMÁDENA

The town of Benalmádena is a part of the city of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Situated at Costa Del Sol, nearly 22 km at the south western part of the town’s provincial capital. The town is a part of the metropolitan area of Málaga, in the heart of Costa Del Sol and Alhaurin De La Torre in the north. The town of Benalmádena covers an extent of merely over 27.20 Km2, from the seas towards the summits of the Sierra De Mijas, falling in some places in the form of a cliff. The town is also located at 280 m above sea level. As of the year 2008, Benalmádena’s documented population reaches approximately up to 58,854. Inhabitants of this town are called “Benalmadenses”. The town of Benalmádena is the home of the “Enlightenment Stupa”, which is known as the largest “stupa” (an important structure in Buddhism) in West, standing from 33 m or 108 feet tall.

The town of Benalmádena’s name was derived from its Arabic name, “Bani al-Medina”, otherwise known as “Son Of The Settlement”. Historically, the town of Benalmádena has been inhabited and settled by a lot of cultures which dates back from the Bronze Age, including the ancient Phoenicians an Romans, and has also been greatly influenced by the Moorish settlement of the southern Iberian peninsula. Two Almenara towers on the coastline which were from the 15th century, was originally constructed in order to guard the coast and its population from the recurring attacks of the Barbary pirates in the days subsequent to the reconquista of the region by Henry IV of Castile.

Costa Del Sol, together with the rest of its region became an important tourist destination during the modern times. Further, the town of Benalmádena has been subjected to an unprecedented urban expansion during the modern times, with a lot of newly constructed buildings and homes, which sometimes caused environmental degradation.

The town of Benalmádena is one of the popular and important resorts in the western part of Costa Del Sol, providing different sets of alternatives which includes the village itself, situated in the town’s upper part, featuring traditional architecture which reflects its origins and supplying remarkable panoramic views; situated further down is the district, Arroyo De La Miel, where most of the population resides, with its privileged tourist attractions including an international pleasure park, and last but not the least, Benalmádena-Costa, where most of the tourist attractions pertaining to sun and sand tourism are focused such as casino, hotels, golf courses, a pleasure harbor, etc. With that being said, this town of Benalmádena has both a traditional Spanish village and a modern, coastal tourist area.
