ANTEQUERA.


Located in the city of Málaga and a part of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia, the town of Antequera is now referred to as “the heart of Andalusia” (el corazón de Andalucía) , due to its central situation between the cities: Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Seville. It is noted for two large, Bronze Age Dolmens.


The city of Antequera is situated within 47 km at the northern part of the city of Málaga, particularly on the A45 road, located at the bottom part of the mountain chains of El Torcal and Sierra De Chimenea, with an altitude measuring 575m above sea level. It dominates the fertile valley enclosed to the southern part by the Sierra De Los Torcales, and towards the north by the Guadalhorce river. It occupies a commanding position. At 817 Km2, the town of Antequera is now considered to be the largest, in terms of area measurement, in the city of Málaga, and one of the largest in Spain. The town’s most recent and documented population is approximately 45,168, and their townspeople are referred to as “Antequera” as well.


The town of Antequera is in fact a wealthy town, both culturally and economically, its historic center is composed of over 500 monuments and buildings which date as far back as the Bronze Age, such as the Manga Cave, Viera and Romerai dolmens. The castle and Santa Maria Basilica can be located at the top of the town. Situated at the historic center are a series of churches, collegiate churches, monasteries and convents, palaces, arches, gates, shrines, stately houses and a citadel. The town’s most remarkable landmark of all is the 18th Century Nájera Palace, which is now currently the municipal museum, the Catalinas Convent and the palace of the Marquises of La Peña, in Mudejar and Renaissance style. The El Toral Nature Area is definitely worth a tour as well.
