JAÉN

The city of Jaén is situated in the south-central part of Spain. The name of Jaén is derived from the Arabic word “Jayyan” which means “crossroads of caravans”. Jaén is also the capital of the Holy Kingdom known as the Santo Reino, which is located beneath the Santa Catalina hill, and from the top was the location of the magnificent castle, bearing the same name, which has now been converted into a “Parador De Turismo”. Up above the said castle, deliciously divine views over the landscape filled with olive trees and the city itself, which spreads out over the smooth slope, forming a small city, which integrates the long established quarters of Arabs and the Medieval design, with monumental areas and contemporary buildings, in an attractive way. The vital work of the Spanish Renaissance, the impressive Cathedral, by Andres de Vandelvira, indeed dominates the city.

Jaén. is the capital city of the province Jaén. It is situated in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, and the people in this city are referred to as “Jiennenses”. Jaén’s current population is 120,021, and the city measures up to 424.40 km2. It is also situated at 573m above sea level.

In the past couple of years, the city of Jaén experienced a great increase in terms cultural tourism. The city is also referred to as the “World Capital of Olive Oil”, due to the fact that it is the largest producer of olive oil, or as the Jiennenses calls it, the “liquid gold”.

The town of Jaén is a place that every one who loves to travel should try to visit, enjoy and if possible - spend a lot of time touring the entire city. Aside from the fact that the city has a rich and interesting history, the castle that dwarfs the city provides the most picturesque Andalusian views there are.

However, aside from these monuments, there are in fact a lot more buildings and archeological architectures in this fascinating and unique city, such as the Walls, the Arab Baths, the Church of Sam Bartolomé, the Church of San Ildefonso, the Church of La Magdalena, the Arch of San Lorenzo, the Chapel of San Andrés, the Church of San Juan, the Monastery of Santa Teresa, the Convents of Santo Domingo, of Santa Úrsula, the Convent of Nuestra Señora De La Merced, the Palace Of The Condestable Iranzo, and the Palace of Villardompardo, which is the location of the fascinating Museum of Popular Arts And Traditions And The International Museum Of Naif Art.

The city of Jaén’s Out-of-town Park is located in the surrounding boondocks, a guarded natural space because of its environmental and recreational significance.

Jaén City’s motto is (Spanish) “Muy Noble Y Muy Leal Ciudad De Jaén, Guarda Y Defendimiento De Los Reinos De La Castilia”. Translated in english, their motto dictates, “Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Jaén, Guard and Defense of The Kingdoms Of Castle”. Given by the King Henry II of Castile, this motto was given to the city of Jaén attributable to the advantages and benefits that the city had, and to the role that the city was playing in the defense of the kingdom of Castile against the Moors.

The city of Jaén’s gastronomy is indeed quite diverse, they focus on their local dishes such as the “pipirrana”, “spinach a la Jaén”, rice a la Jaén, “veal with chopped garlic”, “trout from the rivers of Jaén”, “ajo blanco a la Jaén”. Apart from the most popular confectionery of the city of Jaén is “rice pudding”, “gachas of Jaén”, “pestiños”, “gusanillos”, and “ochios”.
