PUNTA UMBRÍA The town of Punta Umbria is situated near the capital, on the banks of Odiel, which as turned in to a significant tourist destination attributable to its beaches of fine golden sand. Further, the town provides excellent quality installations to the tourists of which it entices a huge number each and every year. According to the 2008 census, the town had 14,515 inhabitants and they are referred to as the “Puntaumbrieños”. The town’s surface area is approximately 38 square kilometers, and has a density of nearly 361.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Additionally, the town is located at an altitude of 7 meters and it also takes 25 kilometers to travel from the province capital, Huelga. Within this town are the Marismas Del Odiel, and the Enebrales De Punta Umbria Natural Beauty Spots, two of of the many natural spaces of ideal archeological interest. The town originated with its watchtower which was constructed in the town of Huelva council during the 16th century, despite that the inhabitants did not appear until the 19th century. There was only one particular watchtower during the times of Carlos III, a customs police post and some freshmen's punts. During the year 1896, some Englishmen belonging to the new Riotinto Mining Company constructed a variety of wooden houses in the colonial style in order for the manager’s of the company. During the 20’s the town’s first historic Spanish Holiday makers arrived. - A normal river transport service with Huelva was established In the 30’s, it’s fishing industry reached its heyday. Then finally, the town was declared as an independent municipality during the year 1959. There are several excellent beaches running along towards the southern side of the “Punta” (point). The closest beach located at the town is the “Playa La Mata Negra”, lined with a lot of restaurants, bars and summer chiringuitos. This beach in fact provides all of the best facilities including parasols and hammocks which are for hire, showers, toilets, and lifeguard. Sailing, boat trips and windsurfing are among the activities offered locally. Finally, the town of Punta Umbría now has a very distinct appearance which saw the English, whose presence has been the remarkable architecture of the woode houses wherein they spent the summer and are still referred to as "casas de los ingleses" or, “house of the English”. One of the many touristic areas here in this town is the “Casa Museo” or the house museum, which recreates the British’ way of life in this town of Huelva, Andalusia , during the late 19th century.
