PALOS DE LA FRONTERA Palos De La Frontera is a town situated in the southwestern part of the province of Huelva, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The town is located nearly 14 km from the province of the capital, Huelva, with an area that measures up to 50 km2. The town is also located at about 23 m above sea level. According to the 2009 census, the town of Palos De La Frontera as a population of 9,043 inhabitants, with a population density of 180.86 inhabitants for every square meter. Palos De La Frontera is situated at the Tierra Luna region, facing the capital and on the shores of “Rio Tinto”, on the fruitful terrain committed to the full cultivation of strawberries, fruits and vegetables. The town also includes some of the lakes that eventually forms the “Paraje Natural Lagunas de Palos y Las Madres”. The town of Palos De La Frontera is well-known, and of great interest to tourists due to the fact that during month of August, in the year of 1492, the town was the birthplace of the Discovery seeing that was from this port where Columbus set sail towards his adventure and the Pinzon brothers who accompanied before him were born here. Palos De Le Frontera’s origins dates back during 1322, back when the town was granted to Alonso Carro and his wife Berenguela Gómez by Alfonso XI of Castile during the Christian conquest, between the years of 1239-1249. Despite of the fact that the town may have been inhabited during the earlier centuries by Paleotic, Tartessian Roman, Visgothic and Muslim inhabitants. The town of Palos De La Frontera’s name has been derived from the Latin word “Palus” which means “lake”. Throughout the Al-Andalus period, it was a small settlement which developed a part of the territory of Nebla and its inhabitants made their living from agriculture and livestock. Palos De La Frontera offers a variety of fascinating buildings which now includes the La Rábida Monastery, a significant center of social and cultural relations with Latin America, as well as the castle, St. George’s Parish Church, the Pinzone house, and the Fontanilla, a spectacular Mudejar fountain which is also protected by a shrine.
