ISLA CRISTINA The town of Isla Cristina is located at the western part of the province of Huelva, in Costa De La Luz, also known as the “Coast Of Light”. The town is situated at approximately 7 km from the border of Portuguese, and has an altitude of 7 meters above sea level. Additionally, Isla Cristina has an area that measures 49 square kilometers and it takes about 56 kilometers of distance from the town’s capital towards Isla Cristina. As of 2009, according to census, their current population is 21,324. Their inhabitants are also referred to as Isleños. The present name of Isla Cristina was given in honor of Queen Maria Cristina De Borbon during 12th of April 1834, due to her favors towrds the island throughout the course of the cholera epidemic in the year 1833 towards 1834 which affected large areas of Andalusia and Extremadura. Prior to this one, the town’s name was the “Real Isla De La Higuerita” translated as “Real Island of La Higuerita” or it was known prior to the formation of Council during the year 1833. The name was derived from “La Higuerita” where water was being collected during the early times of their settlement, referred to as the “pozo de la higuera” or “well of the fig tree”, where the first settler of La Higuerita, Faneca, built his house close to the well and the fig tree. These are now the symbols that are included in the town’s coat of arms. Isla Cristina is a young, modern town with hospitable and seafaring tradition. It is an ideal location in order to find salted meats and canned fish. Particularly in this town, tourists will surely enjoy lots of attractions, such as the town’s stunning beaches and the marine resorts, which includes the Islantilla, Centro and Punta Del Caimán. The carnival as well as the Atlantic Coral Festival are also popular in this town. You can also find the Marshes of Isla Cristina nature park, which accommodates certain habitats with different salinity levels, where we can witness a rich and various flora, and magnificent number of birds. Puerto Posquero also features a magnificent view, especially whenever the fishing boats unload their catches. Tourists may either enjoy takng a walk at Puerto Posquero or plainly watch the sun as it sets in the evening and rises back again in the morning. Their factories, located at the side of the harbor sell Isla Cristina’s popular canned tuna, mackerel and salted fish. Naturally, since this is located near the port, and also along the Costa De La Luz, there are of course countless of superb seafood restaurants to choose from, such as the widely-known “Casa Rufino” located at the Carretera De La Playa” road to the main beach, along with the “chiringuitos” also known as the summer beach bars bordering the beach.
