AYAMONTE

The town of Ayamonte is situated in the province of Huelva. According to the census of 2009, the town of Ayamonte has a population of 20,334, and their inhabitants are referred to as “Ayamontinos”. The town is located right next to the Portuguese border, near the banks of the Guadiana, on bumpy ground, full of slopes and hills. Parts of this town is included in the Marismas De Isla Cristina Natural Beauty Spot. Ayamonte additionally has an area of 143 km2 with an altitude of 63 m above sea level. The town’s name was derived from the Greek term “Anapote” which means “on the river”.

With both fishing and its dignified tradition, the town protects the traces of various eras which includes the ruins of a Roman castle, which is now a State Hotel, from which you can be able to view the ancient, rural, medieval town and the new seaboard commercial town. It is a strategical position with an interior port, protected against the winds and a varied network of communications.

Up until the year 1990s, the town of Ayamonte inhabited an important position in order to cross Spanish towards the Portuguese border, with its regular ferries, across the river to Villa Real de San Antonio in Portugal,

During the year 1991, a remarkable new suspension bridge was opened 2 km at the northern part of Ayamonte, which eventually took away cross-border traffic at the recently created motor way which connects the Algarve with Huelva city and Seville. The journey from Ayamento towards Faro on the Algarve now takes merely 45 minutes.

The town of Ayamento is an ideal place to take a relaxed stroll, due to the fact that a lot of its narrow streets are pedestrianized. These streets therefore connect together small, attractive plazas, which are hidden but filled with busy pavement cafés and bars serving excellent seafood of the Huelva Costa De La Luz.

One of the most fascinating buildings in the town of Ayamonte is the church of Nuestra Señora De Las Angustias and Saint Francis’ church, both of them from the 16th century, the Parish Church of El Salvador, which was from the 15th century, and the Nabob houses.

Another touristic zone of great elegance is the Plaza De La Laguna, which is in fact a perfect choice of eating places with outdoor seating, allowing tourists to enjoy the town’s picturesque landmarks. Next to the main square is the Paseo De La Ribera, is the harbor and a lot more distant is is the ferry dock.

The Parador has a magnificent restaurant and rooms with spectacular views all over Guardiana river and across to Portugal.

The nearest beach is the new resort of Isla Canela, which is only a five minute drive away from the town of Ayamonte. It features a wide variety of sandy beach, with chiringuitos (summer beach bars), hammocks for hire, parasols, and showers. This is a fast-growing resort with lots of new holiday apartment blocks, along with a large hotel, the Riu Canela, and a golf course. Nevertheless, it also has an extensive sand dunes and marshes home to plentiful wildlife.
