AYAMONTE The town of Ayamonte is situated in the province of Huelva. According to the census of 2009, the town of Ayamonte has a population of 20,334, and their inhabitants are referred to as “Ayamontinos”. The town is located right next to the Portuguese border, near the banks of the Guadiana, on bumpy ground, full of slopes and hills. Parts of this town is included in the Marismas De Isla Cristina Natural Beauty Spot. Ayamonte additionally has an area of 143 km2 with an altitude of 63 m above sea level. The town’s name was derived from the Greek term “Anapote” which means “on the river”. With both fishing and its dignified tradition, the town protects the traces of various eras which includes the ruins of a Roman castle, which is now a State Hotel, from which you can be able to view the ancient, rural, medieval town and the new seaboard commercial town. It is a strategical position with an interior port, protected against the winds and a varied network of communications. Up until the year 1990s, the town of Ayamonte inhabited an important position in order to cross Spanish towards the Portuguese border, with its regular ferries, across the river to Villa Real de San Antonio in Portugal, During the year 1991, a remarkable new suspension bridge was opened 2 km at the northern part of Ayamonte, which eventually took away cross-border traffic at the recently created motor way which connects the Algarve with Huelva city and Seville. The journey from Ayamento towards Faro on the Algarve now takes merely 45 minutes. The town of Ayamento is an ideal place to take a relaxed stroll, due to the fact that a lot of its narrow streets are pedestrianized.
