One of Huelva’s most significant moment was during the Roman period, wherein the copper reserves were discovered and the mining process began. Due to its own location, the Romans named it as “Onuba Estuaria” and its inhabitants were known as “Onubeses”. Apparently, the Romans stayed there up until the 5th century and later on, the Mooors occupied it who then created the Taifas kingdom. They were the ones who built the mosques, walls, forts and were also responsible for building those beautiful villages inland full of white houses.
Throughout Alfonso X’s reconquest from the year 1258 to 1262 to el sabio castles, churches and forts were constructed all over the province.
During the 15th century, Huelva became a lot more significant due to the discovery of America. Christopher Colombus began his expedition towards his discovery to the new continent from Puerto De Palos De La Frontier in Huelva,
Unfortunately, in the year 1755, the city of Huelva was completely destroyed by an earthquake and had to be reconstructed.
Fishing has often been one of the main contributors with regards to the economy of Huelva. Shellfish, Tuna, and other types of fish have contributed a significant amount of income to this province over the centuries along with the copper mines. The English bought the River Tinto copper mines during the 19th century and they also established the Victoria Neighborhood.
Industrial development occurred which entirely changed the industrial sector’s panorama during the year 1964. At present, the most vital sectors are services and tourism, notwithstanding the fact that the fishing industry and agriculture, especially strawberries are still extremely essential.
