SIERRA NEVADA

The Sierra Nevada, which means “Snowy-Peaked Mountains” in Spanish, is a chain of mountains located in the province of Granada. The highest point of continental Spain known as Mulhacén, at 3,478 meters (11,411 ft) is located at the said town.

Parts of the mountain chains makes up the Sierra Nevada National Park. Further, the range has also been given the “Biosphere Reserve” award during the year 1976 due to the distinctiveness of its plants and wildlife. This town is also known as the “Botanic Jewel of Europe”. The Sierra Nevada Observatory is situated at the northern slopes at about 2800 m.

This town has a rather unstable past with regard to its history. The town had undergone through numerous name changes, and it began during the first century, they referred to this town as the “Monte Solarius” and this town was utilized as the border between the Roman provinces of Taraconense and Hispania. Sierra Nevada’s name was again changed during the Visgoth period, and was turned into “Monte Solorio”. Subsequently, after the arrival of the Muslims and due to their strong presence in the province of Granada, the name was yet again changed for the third time to “Yabal Sulayr” or “Monte del Sol” if translated in Spanish, and “Sun Mountain” in English. It has also been referred to as “Monte La Nieve” or “Snowy Mountain” and then “Sierra Le Helada” or if translated means “Icy Snowy Peaked Mountains”. Finally, during the 18th century, the town took their current name of “Sierra Nevada” otherwise known as “Snowy-Peaked Mountains” or in other translations, means “Snowy Range”.

Sierra Nevada takes less than a two hour drive from the Costa Del Sol and the journey in between takes you to a few of the many remarkable, stunning and deliciously divine scenery that you can see in the province, especially in the region of Antequera.
