It has been said that the town of Motril was once named as “Moctril” or “Mentrel”. The town consisted Emir of Granada’s large farmhouse, and was tied closely to Salobreña. After some time, the Arabs, or the Moors, claimed the town as their own, and due to the seaside location, Motril flourished and became well-known as a fishing town.

It was then conquered by the Catholic Moors during the year 1489, it was left nearly uninhabited, after the Moors abandoned the town from being expelled during the year 1507. Subsequently, it was then repopulated with the Christians from the Castile kingdom. It was attacked and destroyed during the War of Alpujarra during the year 1569.

Due to the strategic location of the town of Motril, which is 2 km off the coast, the town’s location was able to protect the Motril and its inhabitants from the attacks of the Berber pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries. Being popular in terms of beaches, there are three beaches that really draw lots of people, all summer long. These are the Playa Granada, Playa De Poniente, and Playa De Calahonda. All of them offer remarkable features such as the abundance of sand, exceptional water, and frequently offer nighttime, open-air concerts. Water sports are offered in most beaches. However, there are those beaches that are in fact smaller, secluded and more private which offers a romantic getaway for couples and even nude sunbathing.

This time capsule will be then opened on the 22nd of July 2023, in order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of this event.
