LOJA


The town of Loja is situated in the western corner of the province of Granada. It takes 54 km to travel from the town’s province, to reach Loja. The town also measures 454 km2, with an altitude of 448 m above sea level. As of this moment, the town’s population reaches approximately 21,570 and the people who live in Loja are known as “Lojeños”


Its remarkable opulence accompanied by the magnificent landscape of the surrounding area, by the reputed “Sierras De Loja” of which the highest peak, and “Sierra Gorda”, with a distance of 1,671 m beyond sea level. This surrounding area is in fact one of the final steps in the high plateau which connects the eastern part of Spain towards Andalusia.


The town of Loja was formerly the Moorish town of Medina Lauxa or Loxa, and the town was seized by the Christians back in the year 1486, during the Reconquista. Isabella I gave the town of Loja the name, “flor entre espinas” which means, “Flower among thorns”.


Loja’s rough terrain with heights measuring from 487 m of altitude in the urban area, to 1614 m of the Peak Cabras, located in the Sierra De Loha provides a massive range of picturesque landscape which is frequently speckled by colorful paragliding and hand gliding.


The town is also known as the “Ciudad Del Agua”, which means “City of Water”. This is attributable to the fact that Loja is located in the edge of the Genil river, which therefore divides the town into two. This crossroad eventually leads towards the town of Córdoba, going north, and into Alhama De Granada, going south.


Strategically located in what is now a historically significant position, the town served as a defensive center under the reign of Moors, who took advantage of the town’s location to guard the plain. Its military importance as a Moorish fortress can be detected these day in the remains of walls and a tower of the former Islamic Alcazabra (citadel).


The origins of the town of Loja existed ever since the Prehistoric period. The Phoenicians named this town as “Alfeia”, Romans referred to it as “Tricolia” and as previously mentioned, the Moors named it as “Medina Lauxa” or “Loxa”. The town’s name “Loja” is shared by a city and a province located in Ecuador, founded during the year 1553, by the Spanish captain named Alonso de Mercadillo.


The town of Loja offers a number of magnificent churches, and two of those are the “Iglesia De San Gabriel”, which is designed by Diego De Siloé, which provides numerous excellent Renaissance architectural attributes. Another one is the Iglesia De Santa Maria De La Encarnación, designed by a neoclassical architect Ventura Rodriguez, which has Gothic and Mudéjar elements and an exquisite belfry.


Another interesting place to visit is the Sierra Martilla site, the home of Megalithic necropolis and a settlement from the same period. The town of Loja additionally features countless of fountains and natural springs which can be located in various parts of the town center. This includes the 25-spout fountain, as well as the Fuente Santa, which is famous for the healing properties of its waters. The countryside is situated at the center of this town and the area that surrounds it is perfect for cycle touring and sports adventure which includes paragliding, hand gliding and caving, not to mention of course the traditional fishing at the Riofrio intensive preserve.
