INTRODUCTION Located at the north eastern part of the Granada province, one of the most recognized features of Baza is the towering mountains, which is only 12 km away that overlooks the landscape like a precautionary watchtower. During December 1489, subsequent to the six month siege and El Zagal’s numerous attempts, the town of Baza decided to surrender to the Catholic Monarchs. The Muslim leader, CId Hiaya was baptized as a Christian at the royal tent of the Catholic Monarchs and was given the name of “Pedro De Granada”. He fought side by side with the Christians’ military operations after he was baptized. By the time the entire region was Christianized, the Moorish community was expelled and that marked the end of the coexistence of all the three cultures - the Christians, the Moorish and the Jewish - which had lasted in the Al-Andalus period for nearly eight centuries. III. GENERAL INFORMATION A. Geography, Population And Other Interesting Facts As previously mentioned, the town of Baza is situated in the north eastern part in the province of Granada, Andalusia. It is known to be the largest town in the province of Granada, measuring up to 546 km2, with an altitude of 844 m above sea level. Further, this ancient town overlooks the trough of the valley that takes its name, located in the face of “Sierra De Baza”, a Natural Park that extends up to 52,337 hectares. Attributable to the town’s humidity and dense vegetation, the town has been considered as a real “climatic island”. The town’s height reaches more than 2000 m which contrasts the surrounding area. The town is also along the A-92 northern part, and just more than 100km from the City of Granada. The town of Baza bears the postal code of 18800. The town’s current population is approximately 23,359 and their town’s inhabitants are being referred to as “Bastetanos”. B. Climate The town of Baza has two main weather conditions and it is either normally or cold, with intermittent attacks of snow and ice. The town’s mean temperature during winter is nearly below 10ºC within more than a five to six month period. Needless to say, summers are dry and warm with an average temperature of more than 25ºC, higher during the month of August, which is considered as the hottest month of the year in the town of Baza. Even though their weather state condition tends to be generally dry, there are still intermittent rainfall during spring and autumn. During summer, the entire town of Baza has the possibility of being intensely hot and extremely arid. IV. Real Pósito - Royal Granary, Baza Built during the year 1762, under the reign of Carlos III. It retains an exquisite courtyard inside with galleries. The Royal Granary’s front is decorated with the chief magistrate and the mayor’s royal heraldry. B. La Alcazaba De Baza - Baza Fortress, Baza Situated in the Historic Center of the town, and known to be insuperable during its heyday, Three construction stages can be seen its walls, the first stage during the 11th to 12th century and another during the Nazarite period and finally during the 16th century. C. Iglesia De Santiago - Satiago Church, Baza The church was constructed during the 16th century on the Arab mosque of Marzuela in Mudejar style. It has three naves along with high choir at the foot. At the central nave features a Mudejar armor roof, while the side naves features ogive vault roofs. A toral-pointed arch on Gothic pilasters separates the central nave from the high chapel. The high chapel has a Mudejar armor octagonal ribbon roof abundantly decorated with little carved angels and polychromy supported on pendentive. D. Iglesia De Nuestra Señora Santa Maria De La Encarnación - Nuestra Señora Santa Maria De La Encarnación Church, Baza Constructed on the remains of the Moorish mosques which was started during the year 1529, of Gothic style. However, an earthquake destroyed most of this church and only the sanctuary with abbatial chapels with pointed arches and Gothic pilasters remain, and the rest of them was destroyed. During the year 1531, the church was reconstructed thanks to the initiative of the cathedral chapter under a Renaissance project commissioned to Alonso De Covarrubias and to Rodrigo de Gibaja, the master quarryman. E. Fuente De Los Caños Dorados - Golden Spouts Of Fountain, Baza Situated on the road towards Lorca, beside the Puerta Del Peso. It was constructed during the year 1607, which served as a watering hole for travelers who arrived at Baza. F. Ayuntamento Viejo - Old Town Hall, Baza Site of the Baza Municipal Museum. The building was built during the 16th century. After being used as a town hall, during the year 1998 it was converted as the Baza Municipal Museum. The museum is composed of Baza’s archeological antiquities. V. CELEBRATED OCCASIONS A. Carnival The town of Baza’s Carnival celebration which are being held during the month of February are turning out to be more and more extravagant each and every year, with townspeople’s contribution via their creativity in manufacturing magnificent outfits to wear during numerous celebrations. This is a dynamic playacting of a long term, 500 year dispute within the two towns. The people of Baza (Bastatenos) fight by means of throwing paint at their competitors, making this a really special and colorful fiesta! VI. GASTRONOMY The main style of cooking that you will encounter upon visiting the town of Baza are solid home cooked meals. Stews which are composed of fresh vegetables, game and other meats are best during winter, and some of these are: A. Gashas Tortas Try this hot pash dish which contains rabbit, onions, garlic, peppers, potatoes,, white wine and olive oil. B.
