Celebrated Holidays/Festivities If you’re planning to go on a vacation, and you’re still in the lookout for places which not only offers thrilling tourist activities but also superb, picturesque views like no other, then why not consider going to the city of Córdoba instead? Below are a couple of its exceptional tourist attractions aside from its naturally beautiful environment and peaceful surroundings. A. Córdoba’s Great Mosque and Cathedral “La Mezquita” La Mezquita, with an extension of 23,000 square meters is known to be the largest mosque in the whole world. The mosque is also considered to be one of the most remarkable and significant monuments all over Spain. B. Around the “Mezquita” 1. Archiepiscopal Palais Archiepiscopal Palais contains the remains of the palace of epoch of the Goths, in its interior, which subsequently turned into Alcazar Califal, palace of the Arabian Calif. Archiepiscopal Palais was unfortunately abandoned when the court changed to Medina-Azahera. 2. Puerta del Puente Although it was subsequently altered to Renaissance-style, this door was originally a part of the Arabian walls. 3. Puente Romano With its 16 archs, this Roman bridge over the river Guadalquivir once formed a part of the Roman Via Augusta. During the 17th century, a monument to San Rafael was added to the central part of the bridge, which apparently was the town’s patron. 4. Torre de Calahorra At the Southern end of Puente Romano, Torre de Calahorra serves as an Arabian rampart, which originally includes two towers, connected by an arc, to which was added during the 14th century. C. Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos Built by Alfonso XI during the year 1328, The “Palace of the Christian Kings” was his residence until the reconquest of Granada. This was also the place where Boabdil, a Moorish caliph was kept as a prisoner. Inside of the palace, there are, exceptional Roman mosaics, Arabian baths, and a 3rd century marble sarcophagus. There were four towers at the Alcazar originally, in which three of them can still be seen at the present day. These are: Torre de Los Leones, which is the oldest, and the one that serves as the entrance towards the palace; the round shaped Torre del Rio, and the octagonal Torre del Homenaje. The fourth tower, Torre de la Vela, unfortunately was destroyed during the 19th century. The Door of Seville is located at the Eastern part of the gardens apart from the rampart walls and the poet, Ibn Hazm’s monument. D. La Juderia During the time of the Romans and Goths, the Jewish quarter have always been a significant culture and an intellectual center. Monuments were built to let everyone know about Córdoba’s most significant and influential sons: the Arabian philosopher Averroes, Roman philosopher Séneca, and the Jewish philosopher Maimonides. One of the few synagogues existing even at the present time, which was built during the year 1315, can also be located in this particular place. The Bullfight-Museum is located close to it and in the Zoco, you may be able to locate traditional artisany. You may also watch Flamenco performances which are only available to watch during summer. Other attractions are the Casa del Indiano, Chapel of San Bartolome in Gothic-Mudejar style, and the minarets from 11th century, which nowadays form a part of Convento de Santa Clara and Iglesia de San Juan. The old Arabian baths are also located in Calle de Comedias. E. Museums 1. Archeological Museum - Located at the inner part of the Renaissance palace and exceptionally magnificent for the Roman Head of Drusus, the old-iberian Lion of Nueva Cartella, the visigothic Treasure of Donjimeno, and the Arabian Bronce-Stag of Medina Azahara. 2. The Museum of The Arts - Contains the significant collection of paintings and sculptures, of Zurbarán, Goya, Murillo, Sorolla, and Mateo Innuria among others. Located at the interior part of the old Hospital de la Caridad de los Reyes Católicos. 3. The Museum of Julio Romero de Torres - The museum is dedicated to the said painter. Famous specifically for his well-renowned photos of the Woman from Córdoba. 4. The Palace of Viana - The palace presents itself with 14 courtyards and spectacular gardens. The Palace of Viana contains a remarkable collection of tapestries, furnitures, ceramics, porcelains and paintings and a cynegetic library of a total of 7000 volumes. F. Córdoba Town Squares Squares of interest for the tourists are definitely Plaza de las Tendillas , Plaza de la Corredera and Plaza del Potro. - Plaza de las Tendillas, located in the central square town, where the clock sounds particularly like a guitar. - Plaza de la Corredera, where bullfights occurred throughout the course of 17th century. - Plaza del Potro, which is famous from Cervante’s Don Quijote. G. The Roman Ruins Remains of Roman Temple lies in Calle Claudio Marcelo and located in the North-East of the town, there are a lot more ruins closer to the Tower Torre de la Malmuerta.
