II. HISTORY


Though as majestic and incredibly surprising Córdoba is to its visitors nowadays, it is as well majestic and surprising as it was before. Not a lot of people know that during the 11th century, it was considered as one of the most significant capitals in Europe. People belonging from different cultures, beliefs and religions - Christians, Jews and Muslims, lives peacefully together, along with great and influential philosophers, such as Lucius Annaeus, Seneca the Younger, orators like Seneca the Elder and poets like Lucan, scientists and artists who emerged from this small town.


Having an ancient origin, throughout the course of 206 BC, Romans conquered Córdoba and during 169 BC., a Latin colony was found alongside the pre-existing Iberian settlement by a Roman consul named Marcus Claudius Marcellus. Further, between the years 143 and 141 BC, Viriatus beleaguered the town and in 113 BC, a Roman Forum was known to have existed in the city.


During the time of Julius Ceasar, Córdoba was the capital of Roman province known as Hispania Ulterior Baetica. Eventually, it occupied a significant place in Provincia Hispaniae of the Byzantine Empire (552-572) and under the Visgoths, who conquered it during the late 6th century.


It has been known that Córdoba’s significant wonders, came throughout the course of its Moslem occupation, when the city became both an independent Caliphate and the capital of Al Andalus, having one million inhabitants.


Córdoba was then reconquered by Ferdinand III during the year 1236.
