Feast your eyes to the astonishing landscapes, picturesque villages, significant monuments, and remains with historical value which surounds the city of Córdoba. A. The Ruins of Medina-Azahara


During 936, Medina-Azahara was built due to the decision of a caliph named Abdul Rahman. He believed and decided that it is necessary for him to have a new residential town, therefore, he built Medina-Azahara with the help of 10,000 workers within 25 years. Throughout the course of that particular time, Medina-Azahara was the biggest town in all the region. Further, all of the 4,300 columns which were used for Medina-Azahara came from the older buildings in the Mediterranean area.


Alcazar Califal, a palace located on top of a hill, also located below the administrative district with gardens as well as parks, while the town itself can be found in the flat land. Palaces with exceptional beauty, and picturesque view, both “Throne Hall” and “Golden Salon” have arcs of ebony and ivory, along with marble ornaments, gold and precious stones. Located at the center, was a mercury-filled basin, which in effect, reflects the rays of sunlight.


However, this massive exertion did not last for quite a long time. Unfortunately, it was conquered then destroyed by the Bereberes, which made the Medina-Azahara last for merely 74 years. Nearly all of the artworks were stolen, however, lots of them were subsequently combined in countless of locations in the city of Córdoba.


Medina-Azahara was never forgotten despite of it being destroyed, however, during the year of 1910, archeologists started to excavate Medina-Azahara.


B. La Sierra Norte
